Program

The Temple University High School Journalism Workshop is an  intensive, four-week enrichment program operated by the Department of Journalism of the School of Communications and Theater at Temple University and in cooperation with The School District of Philadelphia and Prime Movers-Philadelphia.

Fifteen talented students are participating in this second year of the program; they will conduct interviews, write articles, take photographs, edit audio and video and sharpen their communication skills.  This blog site, tuhspress.wordpress.com is where these bright young journalists share their work and their weekly personal blogs. For more information about our students, you read the bios they wrote about each other  on this page.

The School District of Philadelphia, through the Office of High School Reform, provided summer employment and enrichment opportunities for about 700  students between 14 and 18 years of age through the Career and Technical Education Summer Employment Program. The summer jobs were an extension of the curriculum that career and technical education students learn throughout the school year.

Philadelphia teenagers, including those whose work is printed here, were able to gain valuable work experiences and develop tangible skills that can be used in the workplace. The work allowed students to receive real life hands-on experience that could not be learned in the classroom – to take their classroom curriculum in a practical setting.

Our students traveled to the work sites, presented themselves as young professional journalists and photographers prepared to “cover” the stories of their peers. Included on this site  are the stories and photographs the student-journalists produced.
